Content management systems are all based on a template to set and control the layout of
all pages. The layout will include areas for text you can enter with some choice of fonts,
size, color, etc. Many will also allow you to import pictures and place them in pre-defined
locations in the page template. Once you are given the ability to update your
website YOU must be sure that updates get done and done in a timely manner. You can no
longer complain to your web person that the changes are not getting done.
Many web hosting companies offer Content Management Systems that will allow you to create and manage
a website yourself. For many people these content management systems can be a great way to
get your website up and running quickly.
Two websites that I am familiar with that use content management systems are:
The Village of Bolingbrook and
National Center for Speaker Training.
These sites use different content management systems and both allow the owner to update content
any time they want.
A content management system may be the right choice for your website if:
- You need to update content frequently - more that 5 times a month.
- You feel a need to be in total control of your website and its content.
- Your content can neatly fit into one of the templates offered.
- You are not a creative person and can be happy with the limitations of the template you selected.
Another option is a custom content management system that will allow you to update one or two
sections of your website working with your current website design. This can give you the best
of both worlds; the ability to control content that changes, without the limitation of a
fixed template layout for the entire website.
