In a nutshell, Cloud Computing is using software and data that is NOT located on your local device (computer, phone, netbook, etc.).

The concept is not new. In the 1960’s any terminal connected to a mainframe computer could access any data and run any application located on the mainframe.

Today we use personal computers, cell phones, and other devices to access the "cloud" called the internet. We have all used internet based web applications like e-mail through gmail and hotmail to read and send e-mail from any device with internet access. This is "cloud computing" in the most basic form today.

There is much more to "cloud computing" today than e-mail. Today Google has their Google Docs which is a true online web application for creating documents, spreadsheets, etc. and sharing them with other people. To use Google Docs, all you need is a device with a browser and an internet connection. You do not need any word processing software on your device; the word processing software is built into the Google Docs online web application.

Another example of "cloud computing" is the many photo storage and sharing websites. Some even have web applications that will allow you to do some modification to your uploaded photos.
